Heart of Maryland Bowhunters is a member-run organization committed to promoting the sport of archery through education, training and practical experience. We offer a place for everyone to learn, practice, and develop archery skills. All are welcome regardless of whether or not you are a hunter or a target archer. The club is a nonprofit organization under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)( (3).

Our Organization

The Heart of Maryland Bowhunters (HMB) was established in 1994 as a place for a small group of bowhunters to get together to practice their archery skills. Over the past 30 years we have grown into one of the very best 3D archery courses in Maryland.

The club is situated on 40 acres of the Patapsco State Park with three dedicated members-only practice ranges and a 3/4 mile loop course with 30 3D targets. The three practice ranges consist of a range with nine target butts placed at distances between 10 to 65 yards on a flat range, an elevated shooting platform (normally with at least six 3D targets), and a walk-through 3D range with 20 targets ranging in distances from 15 to 60 yards. The three practice ranges are available to all members at any time of the year, while the 30-target 3D course is reserved for when we have shoots that are open to the public.

Events

During the spring and summer months the club sponsors monthly 30-target 3D shoots normally on the first Sunday of the month but occasionally on a later Sunday to avoid holiday weekends. In 2025, we will have a couple of Saturday afternoon shoots and a couple of Saturday evening spotlight shoots. All of these shoots are open to the public.

All members get their Sunday shoots for free, non-members pay $15.

Most of our targets are Rinehart targets and all are in excellent condition. Our 30-target 3D course, which is separate from the three members-only practice ranges, is a 3/4 mile long loop with varying terrain and many uphill and downhill shots as well as shots from four elevated platforms.

See the calendar for all specific shoot dates.

CLUB NEWS

Our 2025 3D season began with our Cabin Fever shoot on March 2. In spite of the cold weather and the wind chill factor, we had a turnout of 30 shooters. It was a sunny day and the range was set very well. People enjoyed the opportunity to start shooting 3D again. Their enthusiasm was obvious. It was a nice start to our 3D season!

Thank you to the men who helped set up the range on February 23 for the Cabin Fever Shoot. They are a dedicated core of volunteers without whom the club would not be one of the best in the state.

Our next 30-target shoot will be on Sunday, April 6. It is open to the public for $15 per person. Our members shoot for free. Shooters may begin anytime between 8:00 AM and 12:00 PM.

On Saturday, April 5, we will have a work day to prepare for the next-day shoot. We’ll start at 8:00 AM and finish when we finish. There is still a lot of debris from the wind storms that needs to be removed from the range. There will be other projects too, to be determined by our President. We could use more help at these work days. Please come out and give us a hand!
